We influence people every day, either passively or actively but it can be hard to focus on when we really want to and sadly the Jedi wave doesn’t work so well for most of us.
But there are a few things you can try to help increase your odds of being the most influential you can be.
Talk over a meal, offers of food induce a more compliant mood conducive to influence.
Or even a cup of coffee, caffeine (so long as it isn’t too much!) increases systematic processing of arguments, this means a greater tendency to agree with logical argument.
Take a ‘centre stage’ position. For example the middle of a boardroom table not an end. People just process information coming from these ‘centre’ positions better.
Use flattery, even when the person you are speaking to attempts to mentally discount for the compliment, for example where they realise you are doing it only to gain influence, studies have shown that the initial favourable response is far more powerful than any later negative response.
Repeat yourself. Probably the simplest of all. People associate the repetition with the opinion being the common or prevalent one and therefore the right one.
